Magazine article The New Yorker. Magazine article The New Yorker. Fanelli's Cafe, at the southwest corner of Prince and Mercer Streets, is probably the second- or third- or fourth- oldest drinking-and-eating establishment in New York. A darkly inviting painting of the exterior of Fanelli's is reproduced in miniature on the cover of "The Historic Shops & Restaurants of New York: A Guide to Century-Old Establishments in the City," a new book by Ellen Williams and Steve Radlauer.

Discover the bygone city of Mark Twain and Stanford White, Harry Houdini and Edith Wharton in the venerable shops and restaurants that have served discriminating New Yorkers for generations. In Old World dining rooms, gaslit saloons, at jewelers, tobacconists, apothecaries, and more, these are the establishments that have endured by offering highly desirable goods and dining experiences. Visit the tavern where George Washington bade farewell to his troops, the haberdashery where Abe Lincoln traded in his backwoods cap for a more distinguished stovepipe hat, the Lower East Side delis, the coffee merchants of Greenwich Village, the purveyors of riding boots, andirons, brass beds, and nautical charts. From world-famous department stores to humble pasta-makers, this volume is a charming and useful guide to the living landmarks of New York.
"Book arrived before promised date! Interesting book, particularly if you are a New Yorker and are familiar with some of these locales. The bars and restaurants sections struck a personal note as I have eaten, drank and "hung out" in these joints for years. On the downside this volume was published in June 2002 so many of the places mentioned are just "dust in the wind."
This was a fun read, and then I began to use it a lot in teaching. Most of the places listed in it are still in business, actually, which makes it even more fun. Too bad it is out of print, but you can still find used copies!
Old NYC eateries - brief stories o' each. Great history for any 'n all shelves and Libraries 'bout old old NYC.
Interesting history and uniques stories on these businesses and sites.
Bit old and dated but very interesting all the same.
This book is simply awesome
I got my book & love it. Thank you.
The title is misleading. Only the existing businesses are reviewed, not those of noteworthiness that are no longer around but have a place in New York City's history. The book is a pocket edition with the briefest histories, I read the entire book in less than an hour! For the Amazon price of about $11 it was not worth the cost to return it.
