I am a very experienced rider and I am currently an aviation maintenance tech. I bought the book because I recently purchased my first, very used, Harley Evo. This book is put together in plain English. You don't have to be a Harley PHD to read it and accomplish some of the mods listed therein.

Actually I read it cover to cover as soon as I received it. I did have a specific problem I was looking at and found that particular chapter to be very helpful. It gave me all kinds of ideas of problems to look for and what to do about them. It lists part numbers of parts that they talk about in the book. I learned a lot about my Evo powered Electra Glide just looking through the book. It is greatly illustrated with lots and lots of color images.

I was not interested in the Sportster sections of the book. I don't own a Sportster so I thought having Sporty stuff in the book was a space waster. But I am sure the book with two different owners in mind sells twice as many books. I can live with that. It would appeal to Sportster riders as well as the big touring bike riders.

Would I recommend this book? Yes. If you are a new Evo owner then this book will guide you in the right direction. If you are an expert with Evo powered bikes then this book would refresh your thinking and give you new ideas. It sits right next to my Harley Shop manual in my shop. Reading, reading and more reading helps you enjoy the Harley Davidson journey. I've been a Harley owner for 90 days. And I can keep up my end of the conversation because of years of pre-purchase reading and post purchase research.

I didn't buy the book brand new. It was listed as used in good condition or something like that. The book arrived quickly and was really like new. I would call it having shelf wear.
There's a new edition for this book (101 Harley-Davidson Evolution Performance Projects (Motorbooks Workshop), but they are quite similar.

It's a good starting point for those who want to start wrenching on their bikes, and will help the begginer and intermediate gain a lot of confidence. But keep in mind that, although it contains many pictures, tips and other usefull information, it's not a step by step as it seems. You will need the shop manual of your bike as stated at the beggining of the book.

That makes sense: no book like this can cover all the aspects of a shop manual, there are too many specific details for different models. What this books does, and it does it pretty well, is to show you how to do most of the tasks, what tools to use, and how to do it.

It's a great reading, and will teach you a lot. But keep in mind that you will need to learn more by yourself.
This reference manual has insights into the engine past and design. It can provide you with ideas for the future of your build or the reason why your bike may be acting up. There is enough information in this book to preclude you from hanging out at the garage for forty years (although hanging out at motorcycle shop is fun). This provides you with the insight of a several experts, not just author but all of his friends.
Great book, yeah it's old but so are the Evo's it's about. Too much Sportster stuff for my tastes but the big twin stuff is awesome and well worth the price. If you only get one book, get this one.
husband is very happy with it
A good book with easy to understand instructions. Loots of Evolution Big Twins out there. I use the manual along with internet research for the most current parts and methods.
Basic but right to the point, simple and great illustrations. Would recommend to anyone with a Harley Davidson they would like to improve the performance.
