great
Enjoyed very much
I picked this up for .25 at a library book sale months ago. Over the holidays, I worked my way through the pile I bought that day and found this one at the bottom. Because I am an astrologer, I remembered being excited when I saw it. My hope was that the author was going to utilize this tool as a major plot point and show astrology in a positive light. I was disappointed to find that it was only used briefly. More over, it was treated as the most weird of a weird group of psychic abilities.

The tone of the book is strongly dated to its 1990's California setting. Seen in that context, the author may have intended it to add a serious contribution to the "New Age" atmosphere of that decade. It was interesting though to look back 20 years and see both how far we have come and how much further we have to go as a species in understanding and accepting our higher spiritual gifts.

Let me begin by stating that I am no lover of Astrology, nor of psychic phenomena. I mistrust something which has and does attract such a large group of charlatans overtly interested in separating me from my money. I don't believe in Astrology, reading palm lines, tea leaves and the like. On the other hand, I know there are a great many things about the human mind and about our universe I don't understand. Such as the possibility of extraterrestrial life. I do understand this, however; Martha Lawrence is an impressive talent and a very good writer. For me, Dr. Elizabeth Chase strikes exactly the right note.

Chase has experiences, insights. She can read auras. But not always and she can be mistaken. Moreover, she freely and frankly admits it. As a parapsychologist and a private investigator, she uses all her skills. When a cop reluctantly asks her help with his investigation into the death of a friend, Chase is refreshingly up front and not at all defensive about her talents. An astrologer with an attitude. It leads to some original and delightful scenes with the cop, Tom McGowan.

Murder in Scorpio is peopled by some strange individuals prone to unusual behavior. Eventually, of course, Chase solves the crime and reveals the killer, but not without danger to herself, and, unfortunately, to others. The sensuality within the developing relationship between Chase and McGowan provides effective counterpoint to the rising tension as Chase circles nearer her target. This is an effectively, intricately, plotted novel that will hold your attention throughout. And the final scene is so fitting, so perfect.
Enter Elixabeth Chase a sort of Physic Detective, hired by Cop Tom McGowan to investigate the death of Janice Freeman a one time crush of Tom's. Elizabeth is a very likable character full of self doubt and wry sense of humour, she is hired by Tom to look into the car crash that killed Janice Freeman a very lovely girl that worked for Pacific Properties. Was her death an accident or was it premeditated? this is what Elizabeth is hired to find out. We are introduced to quite a range of characters from Alan Katz Janice's Ex boyfriend to Pia who runs a bikini shop. I look forward to reading all the books in this series because Elizabeth is a very likeable character with a lot of scope to find out more about her personality. Do yourself a favour and read this book and you too will want to read more about Ms Chase.
I enjoyed this book. I am new to mysteries and found this one to be compelling, but I was turned off somewhat by her writing styled. It seemed more like a teen-age romance novel in some ways, especially in some of the description. However, I am anxious to read her second attempt to see if the writing has improved. I think she has great potential.
Well crafted girl detective novel with a unique twist. Beautiful, sexy, former parapsychologist with extrasensory gifts and a private investigator's license is hired by, of all improbable people, a hunk of a California cop. Tom McGowan has a gut feeling that the death of a bright, young law student is not the tragic, but routine traffic accident it seems. PI Elizabeth Chase combines detective work with psychic insights to find out whodunit. Author Lawrence's talent is to make you care about her characters while holding your interest with plot twists. Certainly hope this is just the first of many Dr. Elizabeth Chase mysteries.
P.S. If you find a first hardcover edition of this first Dr. Elizabeth Chase novel, hold on to it. It'll be worth big bucks soon.
