The book itself is simply excellent. This unbelievably true story is very well written and well presented. No personal knowledge of, or even interest in sailing is necessary to fully and completely appreciate and enjoy the amazing and dangerous journey of this very courageous, young, 18 year old woman as she sailed all the way around the world -alone- in her sailboat.

Bernadette and Douglas Bernon have been married since 1990. Before selling the house, the cars and the furniture, and going cruising on their Shearwater 39, Ithaka, in 2000, they lived in Newport, Rhode Island. Contact Us. BoatUS Foundation.

The book is a story of teenage angst, self-discovery and adventure In 2005 Tania Aebi published her second book, "I've Been Around". Tania Aebi writes columns for several sailing and cruising magazines. She lives in Corinth, Vermont.

The book is a story of teenage angst, self-discovery and adventure. Aebi's story is unusual because she was by many standards, poorly prepared for her voyage, but prevailed through common sense, skills she both learned and honed underway as well as a strong sense of determination. Aebi had practically no sailing or navigation experience when she departed on her journey, on 28 May 1985. In 2005 Tania Aebi published her second book, "I've Been Around". YouTube Encyclopedic.

In 1985, at age 18, Tania Aebi set out to sail around the world alone. She became instantly famous with Maiden Voyage, the best-selling book she wrote about the solo trip. In over twenty years of cruising by herself and with family, and leading ten-day flotillas to charter destinations in a professional capacity, she has gathered many anecdotes, observations, opinions, cautionary tales and advice. Indeed, she has been around.

She was hired as a columnist in 1997 by the fledging sailing magazine Latitudes and Attitudes. "Casual and friendly in its approach to the sailing world, the magazine's tone provided me with a place to explore my own reflections on what I already knew and continued to learn about the sailing way of life and how to share it all with others." In this, her first book since Maiden Voyage, there is something for the armchair sailor dreaming about sailing off one day, as well as for the sailor in the cockpit actively chasing those horizons.

Tania Aebi caused a world sensation when she sailed around the world solo as an 18yr old, the youngest person ever to do so. She told her story in the excellent 1989 "Maiden Voyage" book. Many years later (2005), Aebi returns with this book.

In "I've Been Around" (230 pages). the author (now in her 40s) brings a collection of sailing-related and other stories, some of which work, some of which don't. One of the better one is "Close Call", in which she recalls being scared in her trip around the world at one point, when she seeks the help of two Sri Lankan guys to tow her into the harbor and wonders about their intent (being a young girl, alone), only many years later to reconnect with one of them, and feeling ashamed about her apprehension then. Most of the stories in this book are 3-4 pages long, and bring the author's recollections of various sailing experiences, now and then. It is not what I expected, to be honest. I had hoped for a more personal book, as in: how her relationship with Olivier (started in her 'maiden voyage') developed and then fell apart (we know they married, had 2 kids, and eventually divorced).

In all, "I've Been Around" doesn't measure up at all to the pleasure that was "Maiden Voyage". This book is not a sequel to it. It's a non-personal book with observations about sailing, nothing more.
Her first book was her solo sail around the world as a teenager in a small boat making it a full scale adventure. I would give it 5 stars.
"I've Been Around" is a good book for a plane trip, vacation, or a Saturday afternoon. That is to say it is a fast easy read and interesting with some humor. If you have ever considered chartering a sail boat in warm waters or like stories of interest ports this a good book. Also there is the "doing something you love" as a career and making it work aspect to the story.
Apparently a collection of essays from her magazine column.
Not as good as authors first book.
A collection of essays. Not as revealing or interesting as her first book, but still a good read. She still has interesting insights and a clear voice.
Very interesting. I enjoyed it
If you read the wonderful book writen by Tania Aebi titled, Maiden Voyage and enjoyed it, then these stories that are inspired from that specific trip, then you will enjoy the inspiration these have to offer. I reread them from time to time enjoying them each and every read.
