Had one long time ago but it was stolen. Looked for one for a long time. Then I found out that you had it.
It has a wealth of information.
beautifully illustrated but perhaps even more importantly well written introduction to the trees of the world---the author loves his subject and the results are that with half a chance the reader will come to share that love.
Great book; beautiful pictures; interesting test.
page 144, 1977 reprint. Picture caption: "The walnut harvest in the Dordogne in southwestern France. Nuts are beaten from the trees with long poles. There is an ancient saying that walnuts, dogs, and w*m*n are all improved by a good beating from time to time." yeah he really spelt it "w*m*n" with the stars.
The book is a tree dictionary + alot of info a gardener might need, like times of year of tree flowering, hardiness maps, etc. So you can probably find that stuff in another book, if you want to, and avoid the "weirdo factor" of this book.
This book arranges trees by family, from oldest to youngest in the evolutionary sense. Finally! a way to group different trees together, instead of a massive listing of "ovate, elliptical, simple, entire" you know the stuff. It also has great pictures. It's pretty old, but I haven't found anything newer that's anywhere in its league.
this book has been my touch stone for 30 years as a professional gardener. i'd recommend it to everyone. it has been stolen from our public library reference section. buy it. you will dog ear it as i've. laurence
Johnson may not be an expert on trees, but he really did his research, and the book is a wonderful way for the novice to gain appreciation of the trees around him. The book is engaging enough to read straight through (as I did), but also a valuable reference book. It's a shame it's not more readily available.
