Robert Goldstein, a long-time participant in aquarium circles, holds a doctorate in microbiology. Those of you who read SeaScope, distributed by Aquarium Systems to local fish stores, should recognize his name and work from the article he wrote in Volume 21, Issue 2, 2004, on the surprising and alarming appearance of a breeding population of Lionfish ( Pterois volitans ) in the western Atlantic, as least as far north as North Carolina

This expanded and updated edition of a valuable manual for marine aquarium hobbyists provides the latest scientific discoveries and aquarium techniques for keeping and propagating living corals. The coral reef, both in the ocean and in a marine aquarium, is a symbiotic system of corals and beneficial algae in a community with other marine life forms. The author also discusses sponges, echinoderms, mollusks, crustaceans, and fishes, and advises on controlling and eliminating diseases and parasites in a marine aquarium. Slightly out of date. Incomplete. Sketchy in places. Nevertheless, one of the better ones out there. Too much direct "how to" without adequate explanation for exactly how to do it. Actually, somewhat mediocre, but better than average among a limited and mediocre batch of books. At the moment, Reef Secrets by Nilson and Fossa is a favorite, primarily because they deal with ideas and principles rather than today's best guesses at nuts and bolts.
In the past two years, I have engulfed myself into Reef keeping and have finally been able to properly maintain a great mini-reef. Along the way, I have wasted tons of money because pure ignorance. Most of the things I wish I knew when I started were in the book. If you have a reef tank, are thinking of starting a reef, or want to improve your current set up, this is one of the books to add to your library.
This book clearly (but sometimes too technically) explains everything you need to know about:
- Live Rock - Protein Skimming - Heating/Chilling - Wave making - Proper Lighting - Care of marine fish - Care of soft and hard corals - How to save money on unnecessary items - How to feed your fish and corals what they really want - So much more...
For $15.00 bucks, you cannot beat it! I would also recommend: Natural Reef Aquariums by John Tullock ISBN# 1890087009
The best way to describe this book is as follows: Its written by a highly intelligent person with a PHD and they aren't afraid to flaunt it.

I seriously felt like I was being talked down during the whole time I was reading this book- and I read it from cover to cover! Although it does contain a lot of helpful information, it was presented in a very "college Biology textbook" kind of format. Not really my style. Very technical, and very dry.

More recommended for more advanced marine aquariusts and marine biology students.
Purchased this book for my husband who would rather watch than read. He has actually enjoyed this immensely. Lots of good quality photos. Organized and referenced well enough that it is easy to quickly find a answer to a question.
Knowledgeable as well. My husband is a novice & I am just a beginner salt water enthusiast and this book contained info for both of us.

Very happy with the shipping. Came in perfect condition without so much as a dent in the corners from shipping.
We are both very happy with this buy.
Thank you!
This book entailed alot of info for the beginer hobbiest,, detailes included water chemistry, salinity, proper set up of a tank, the book illustrated sum corals witn nice pictures, this is a good refercne book to keep on hand for the beginner, knowledge is key wiht salt water aquariums, there are differetn problems that arise every day, its changing,, the book was in good condition and no markings were visiable so was a good buy,
I don't think the book has "The latest scientific discoveries and aquarium techniques for keeping and propagating living corals", as it advertises. It has only 2 chapters related to corals, with little really interesting information (even for a newbie). The rest of chapters have aquarium generalities exposed by a PhD in a complex language. Don't waste your time on this one.
Pass, there are way better references out there.
Taught me everything I know
