Penny Jordan was the most common pen-name used by prolific fiction writer Penelope Halsall. This is a comprehensive list of her novels and written works from her career which ended upon her death at 65, and includes her posthumous works. She used a range of different pen-names, from which this list derives its sequence. Duchess in Disguise (1979). A Wager for Love (1979). Love Unmasked (1979). Guardian of the Heart (1979). Dangerous Engagement (1979). Love's Masquerade (1980). The Fortunes of Love (1980).

This is an early PJ Harlequin Presents romance. Rather familiar formula but still an enjoyable read. I'm collecting all of her books, especially the earlier HP's.
I read this book so long ago...and I can still recall the words! That is what makes it memorable for me. Somer has always loved Chase but cannot believe that a man of his class could or would ever love her. Loved it and so glad to have found it again!
I think with some Penny Jordan books, readers either like the book
or dislike. I was in the middle but, this story did keep me interested
to the end and it does follow Jordan's usual formula of sexy Alpha male
VS younger,innocent virgin female.

***********SPOILERS*******************************************************

Lovely virgin Somer is devastated when she discovers that her fiance
is not only cheating on her with another woman,he also only wants $$$
from Somer's wealthy father so,what does Somer decide to do ?
She decides to "turn the tables" on her ex-fiance and seduce a sexy
photographer named,Chase (yes, that is his name). She does know
that Chase is basically,a male slut, but what the hell -why not ?
Long to short,Somer gets in a secluded spot with Chase and then, loses
her nerve...also,Chase (ultimate Alpha!!!) has the nerve to be "hurt" because
Somer wants to USE HIS BODY to loose her virginity !?!?..The nerve of this
girl !...Somer was so freaked out,she left this place the next day and went home.

Fast forward to five years later and Chase has tracked down Somer and proceeds
to blackmail her into marrying him over the nude photos her took of her five years ago.
Somer, not wishing to bring shame on her father, agrees to marry,"in name only".
This does not sit well with Chase. This couple go thru a sort of dance..."I want you,
Do not touch me (but I love you)...I can't stand you"...(We get the picture).

I thought it was well written. It kept me engrossed. I neither liked nor disliked the
characters but...my opinion is BOTH of these people had a case of the,"self-pride
syndrome". I say neither was bad, they just had too much pride. It was Somer's
idea to lose her virginity to Chase (but she fell in love with him) and could not let
go of the past. Chase had the same thing, his "pride" was hurt and felt used and also
assumed,Somer was really,a slut with the men which,she was not,in fact,kept herself
a virgin until she married Chase (then he had his way with her-thus reverting Somer
back to her previous behavior of not trusting again). I thought still a good Penny Jordan
story (if) you like this sort of thing... (a plus is several sexy, love making scenes).
Somer is accosted by a stranger at the hotel lifts, he laughs at her - 'Just testing to see if you actually are still wet behind the ears,' he drawled mockingly in response. 'I don't know who let you out alone without your leading reins, little girl, but they sure as hell must be worrying about you.' And from there on, Chase is inexusably crude and jeering to the young 18yr old he has only just met.

'Trembling with rage and humiliation Somer refused to give in to the urge to close her eyes, to blot out his bitterly triumphant smile and the green glitter in his eyes as his glance moved slowly down over her unprotected body.' And then he takes photographs of her making her feel like a cheap slut. I despise the synopsis calling this humiliating near rape a passionate encounter. And of course he must pop back into her life using the photographs as blackmail into marriage. For someone who kept calling her a slut with an endless string of lovers, it weird how Chase constantly forces himself onto her.

I can't remember a more sleazy, soul destroying alpha jerk. A heroine with a backbone would have spat on Chase, told him to do his worst and just be honest about the blackmail with her father.

After mocking her anguished fear and pain, purring his contempt, the end confession is pathetically lame. I don't care how many PennyJordan fans hit the unhelpful vote - reaching the final chapter was a relief. So not a love story.
Her dream husband.

Ever since their passionate encounter, Somer's dreams had been filled with the lean, tanned body of Chase Lorimer. She hadn't been able to look at another man - even though she'd thought she'd never see Chase again.

Now, Chase was back, and this time he wanted marriage - but on his terms. Somer had two choices: she could consent to be a convenient wife, or spend the rest of her life dreaming about him. Although the situation wasn't ideal, she knew she had to take a chance on the real thing...
