Only 10 left in stock (more on the way). False Pretenses was not only my first contemporary suspense novel, but was also my first hardcover, published in October 1988. We've given it a stylishly menacing new cover, and I'm happy to say that the novel didn't need any rewriting, just some updating.

The product of old San Francisco wealth, the daughter of a man who despises her, her life is forever changed when she is brutally assaulted by her sister’s husband, and then rejected by her family.

Beautiful concert pianist Elizabeth Carleton seemed to have it all. But when her fabulously wealthy husband was murdered, she stood accused--and not even her surprising acquittal in court could silence the whispers of her guilt . . . or stop the danger of a killer still at large!((Onyx Books--Fiction)
I’ve read several of Ms. Coulter’s books...I love the FBI series and the Brit in the FBI series so I was so thrilled when I found this early work of hers...the contemporary romantic thriller books...it kept me guessing about the people who were in Elizabeth’s life, of the men who were there to assist her in her new, daunting life, as well as the men who would enter her life in very different, very special and sometimes, scary ways. I was totally surprised with who won her heart...but I won’t say any more so as not to give away too much...???? you’ll have to read to find out...
This was a great story, especially since it was Ms. Coulter’s first book (published back in the 80's but recently released as an audio book). It made the miles fly by on our recent road trip. Well worth the purchase price and anyone listening to it will enjoy it.

However, it had some flaws. I’m not faulting Ms. Coulter all that much. After all, it was her debut novel. But it could have benefited from some better editing. It was at least 25% longer than it needed to be, with several scenes that really weren’t necessary (and one that was not realistic at all. No prosecutor, even one who’s a total jerk, would be blatantly insulting to a rich and powerful family).

But my main objection was the head-hopping, i.e., the jumping around from different characters’ points-of-view in the same scene. This is a common newbie author mistake. I made it myself in my first stories, which is probably why I’m so sensitive to it now. But her publisher’s editor should have caught it back then.

Using different voices for the different characters’ points-of-view was often helpful, and sometimes downright fun. It felt like we were listening to a play sometimes. But a few times it added to the distraction of the head-hopping.

Still, I feel this story is worthy of four stars and I would recommend it to mystery lovers.
Miss Coulter Amazon listed this book as contemporary so I figured I better read it to see what they meant. So it's all about a blonde beautiful virtoroso pianist acquitted of killing her 70 year old hubby and then running his billion buck conglomerate and firering all the presidents and promoting women to the job. But then it gets down to several love affairs until 70 percent of the book until the real killer is uncovered but now I will let future readers enjoy the Explosive ending.
I would have given this 5 stars but the format was rather confusing. There were no chapter breaks when the storyline would change from one scene or group of characters to the next. I got used to it but had to be aware of what was going on. This is usually not the case with her books. Could be a Kindle Translation problem.
I have always enjoyed Coulter's FBI Series with Savich and Sherlock. I find myself unable to put this book down until the very last word. Murder and mayhem are the tools of this great writer. Thoroughly enjoyable.
Good story. A lot of different characters. A little too many. It was a good story line but not easy to follow due to switching, thoughts and characters without starting a new chapter. I actually never read one of her stories that didn't flow well, so a little disappointing.
i love Catherine Coulter books! Mostly her FBI series. They are clean not laden with bad language or sex but riveting with lots of excitement. It was in great shape. Read them all you will love them
Catherine Coulter really is a brilliant author! This story was very heart pounding, tear jerking, drag you in and wouldn't let go. I literally couldn't put this story down.
