"A reliable and detailed document, richly illustrated, of use to students of history and theatre alike."―The Times Educational Supplement

Acting, direction, stagecraft, theatre architecture and design, above all the whole extraordinary evolution of dramatic literature – here is an all-embracing and richly illustrated history, worldwide in scope and ranging from the ancient origins of the theatre in the choral hymns sung around the altar of Dionysus to the fascinating variety of forms that it has taken in our own age. For this updated edition, Enoch Brater, Professor of English and Theatre at the University of Michigan and a specialist on modern and contemporary drama, brings the discussion up to the present day. He surveys new trends in theatre, including performance art, mixed-media stagings, multi-cultural theatre, feminism and theatre, dance theatre and ethnic drama, with a wealth of new illustrations and up-to-date reference material. 286 Illustrations, 41 in color
This well-written and well-illustrated book is a useful outline text for undergrads studying theatre history. This is especially true for the first 15 centuries, and for Western World theatre. After the 18th century, it is focussed on English theatre. It's not a book for American theatre studies. It pays only lip-service (so to speak) to non-Western theatre. But it does a good job to make the rise of European and English theatre cohesive. It leaves out several important movements and has scant breath for Irish theatre.

I still use it for my classes. Students can afford it and will buy it. And it helps them to navigate a huge chunk of our heritage.
A satisfactory book.
nothing special it is a book....you will be purchasing the book haha must buy if you love theater history the pictures are great!
Perhaps this is a biased view of this book, having used it as a textbook in a College-Level Theatre course, but I fount that his book tries too hard to cram every little bit of information into the smallest amount of space possible, which makes it difficult to understand and/or retain what you have read. However, this book is definitely a good source of information for Theatre History and makes very good usage of the available graphics, which accompany the text nicely.
