The official page for the book Sound and Music for the Theatre . This is Deena Kaye, one of the co-authors of Sound and Music for the Theatre. When I first started sound designing in the mid 60's, the art form was not known or recognized in the industry

The official page for the book Sound and Music for the Theatre: The Art & Technique of Design, considered. Tonight's Tony Awards were historic for many reasons. I'm sure my co-author James LeBrecht (whose documentary Crip Camp is being produced in part by the Obamas for Netflix) cheered even louder than I did when Ali Stroker became the first actor in a wheelchair to win a Tony. When I first started sound designing in the mid 60's, the art form was not known or recognized in the industry.

A guide to sound design for the stage discusses the process from initial concept through finished plan and explains how to research sources for recorded music and effects, devise a sound plot, and set up and run sound equipment for a show
It is an informative book, but the last TWO-THIRDS of the book is nothing but interviews!! All the valuable, insightful material takes place in the first 164 pages which is also sprinkled with real-world experiences by the authors. These real-world anecdotes are interesting to read, but most do not further the process along - they exist more like breaks in the action. After the first 150 pages it is a verbatim transcription of interviews with industry people. The last 212 pages could have been condensed into maybe 50 pages by extracting only the pertinent information. FYI: this is not 400 pages about the Art and Technique of Design; it is nearly 150 pages of info with a final 200 pages of rhetoric. I would not have paid this kind of money for what is a glorified primer.
Very helpful book that helps you think in an organized fashion about the process of designing sound for a production. I've been reading it while designing a show and it has really helped focus me. A good mix of theory and anecdotes from the authors' careers, helps keep things interesting.
A terrific book for Stage Managers to round out their awareness and insight into the sound designer and composers process as part of a theatrical collaborative team.
