A collection of reels written in the keys of C, Am, G, Em, D, A, E, F and Dm. Each reel is written in a different position. Thus, the guitarist learns to play great sounding flatipicking solos while learning keys and positions. Play along CD allows the guitarist to hear each piece and to play with a rhythm backup.
I have a ton of fun with this book. My students love memorizing these songs.
Fun songs and a nice workout. Too simple and short to play for anybody outside of your living room, though, unless you have a rhythm player with you.
"Flatpicking Guitar Workout" is a collection of reels written in nine different keys (C, Am, G, Em, D, A, E, F, Dm). They are apparently all tunes written by author William Bay. In each key, three scales are shown which present three different positions. The highest you'll get is into a tenth position of the Dm scale while picking "Traverse Bay." There's also a bonus section with mixed positions for the tunes Canadian Bacon, Frost on the Meadow and Happy Floyd. So, while only 32 pages in length, a flatpick guitarist can learn to play 30 new solos from this book. It's a great way to not only learn new repertoire but to also learn keys and positions. Learning these various position will improve a player's improvisation skills. The tunes are presented with A-A-B-A arrangements, and Bay's compositions typically move to minor chords in the B parts.

Author William Bay selected the scales based on what would be easy and useful in upper positions on the fingerboard. I would recommend that beginners start by going through the book first learning all the various tunes in their open positions. Then, go back and learn some others in their positions up the neck. This was the approach I used, and I particularly like the tunes "Broken Garter," "Levelland by Night," and "Rusty Bucket."

Possum Trot (in G), East River (in Em), Stutter Step (in D), Stuck in the Kitchen (in A) were all fun, but my favorites were in Dm (Bucharest, Traverse Bay). Each tune has challenges of its own. The accompanying CD allows the guitarist to hear each piece up to tempo, as well as to play along with only rhythm backup afterwards.

Besides being President of Mel Bay Publications, William Bay is a composer, performer and teacher. He has been commended for his for his innovative teaching methods. With "Flatpicking Guitar Workout," the 30 tunes presented offer numerous benefits to beginning and intermediate guitarists. You can build your technique by using them to develop good hand flexibility and coordination. You can use these tunes in jams. You will gain familiarity with picking in various keys. You'll learn about upper positions on the fingerboard. You'll gain experience sight reading the standard notation, tablature, and/or chords. Finally, you'll be a long way towards getting in shape if you conscientiously undertake this workout regularly on a daily basis. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)
Good songs all over the neck. These songs cover the scales on every register. Tough but fun. A good buy.
