England’s Thousand Best Houses. I HAVE ROAMED ENGLAND all my life. I have climbed Cornwall’s cliffs, wandered Norfolk’s marshes and walked the Pennine Way. I know England’s cities and towns, churches and houses. Today most of them dislike seeing themselves as Europeans, but they are no better at defining themselves as against their Celtic neighbours. They waged wars of suppression against Wales, Scotland and, with peculiar brutality, Ireland.

A great book for the armchair traveler or would-be great house visitor. Jenkins' writing does a wonderful job painting a picture of each house -- I only wish there were more pictures (though I suppose if there were, it would make the book a truly unmanageable size!)
I love this book so much that I have used it in multiple papers. I love to just look through it. Written by a journalist, and does have the style of a journalist. So, it is interesting and beautiful. This is not a picture book, though. There are some houses that do not have any photographs. Little bits of tidbits per house. I say go ahead and buy it, and you won't be sorry.
Authoritative survey of a priceless resource
A must-have for any Historic House junkie. An absolutely wonderful book!
I loved this book. It's a chance to catch glimpses of the big houses, a few small houses, and a sprinkling of those in-between.
The author's word pictures are wonderful, and he has quite a sense of humor, so it's fun to read.
The only drawback would be the dearth of pictures - that's a little disappointing, particularly when he's talking about architectural features. There's a glossary for some of these, but pictures would be better for those of us who are not as informed about these things as we should be.
A very thorough book on the topic of England's best houses...so many houses to see, so little time and so far to travel to see them.
Wonderfully informative and engaging.
It wasn't what I was expecting. It has very few pictures in it. A book about English houses with few pictures? Yes, I was expecting a bit more. But it is OK and will serve the purpose for an upcoming trip.
