Hard to say that I "enjoyed" this book but it is the most unbelievably useful manual for this situation. It was alarming how lonely andmarooned one feels in the moment but this book begins with some tactics that, if followed, produce positive results almost immediately. Even if you are a very well-informed and aware parent, there are approaches that Selekman details that will make you think "HUH!?!... that makes sense - why didn't I THINK OF THAT?!" This is a thousand miles away from psycho-babble and Freudian therapy. It is a hands-on guide to understanding why young people get themselves into these dark holes and why their parents feel so hopeless and useless at understanding how it happened. We were lucky to also access Selekman as our counselor throughout our rebuilding, but this book, if read with an open heart and mind, will get you most of the way there.
Matt is a real treatment hero. He has excellent research and clinical info for those who work with teens. Although the subject is self-harm, which he covers admirably, his insights are useful for working with teens in general. His approach is very strength based. Bravo!
Such a useful resource and can see myself utilizing this. Recommended for all professionals and grad students!
Excellent resource.
