The clinical pearls are very helpful, and the answers explaining the diagnoses excellent and thorough. Students should strongly consider carrying this book with them while doing their rotation in psychiatry. Students need exposure to cases to pass the USMLE Step.

The closest a student can get to the wards without seeing patients! Designed to teach through clinical cases, this text offers 60 of the most common clinical problems in psychiatry along with case discussion questions, clinical pearls, key terms and concepts, and USMLE-style questions and answers to reinforce learning. This is an excellent study guide for the psychiatry shelf exam and the USMLE Step 2.
Great book. I get case files for rotations, with the intent of doing 2-3 cases/day, and always end up doing about 20 cases by the end of the rotation lol. I did have it on me throughout the rotation, and found the pharma tables very useful, especially because we learn the trade names for USMLE and then you'll mostly hear the generic names during rotations, which is included on the tables. Finally, I don't plan on becoming a psychiatrist, but I will keep this book in my library anytime I need to reference, in case I have friends or family that ask for advice from me in the future.
Sometimes it feels repetitive, when you notice chunks of the book on teh same topic, but they do a decent job differentiating similar disorders, so it's a worthwhile read. The tables on drugs are fantastic! I got a 98th percentile on the NBME - For preparation it was patient-specific reading, a few online cases, and otherwise I went through the whole Case Files book.
I bought this book for my medical school psychiatry rotation. This book alone is not one that I would suggest to prepare for the shelf exam. This is a book I would use after you have already studied and you want to quiz yourself to see if you can recognize the diagnosis.

I would use the First-Aid Psychiatry Clerkship Manual and Pre-test Psychiatry Question book instead. I felt those helped me get a great shelf exam score and I also used them to prepare for Step 2 boards.
Used it to study for PA-S end of rotation exams and it was a fantastic book! it had everything I needed to know. I would highly recommend it to any PA-S out there looking for a way to steady for EORs.
Based on the content of the Psychiatry clerkship, being so all about differentiation, not of physical signs, but mental signs, & tying the physical to the mental, this book is great for the Psych clerkship. Admittedly, the vignettes are formulaic, & easy to tease out, but it's in the charts of DDx, criteria rundowns, explanations of the s/sx of psychiatric dz that this book is worthy. In addition, its prose is written well enough that it is amendable to plowing through. I waited to study till the last couple weeks, & got through all but a few cases, a couple days, I read 80-some pages. All in all, an excellent resource.
Useful, great amount of info to prepare for the Psych shelf. Get through this and a Q-bank and you should do fine on the shelf.
Essential for COMAT success. There's material in here that you can't find anywhere else for the NBOME's silly questions.
Very satisfied.Met product description. Also, it arrived early.
