Mystical and practical wisdom―for daily life.

The least known of the Hasidic masters’ teachings―the hanhagot, or “spiritual practices”―are at the heart of this book. These short lists of instructions were created for their followers, inspirational treasures intended to be carried with you at all times. They were to be read again and again―providing spiritual guidance, centering, and aid in bringing joy and God’s presence into daily life.

Practical, personal, and wise, these brief teachings range from straightforward instructions to visualization exercises, meditations, and mantras. Also included are the hanhagot of two neo-Hasidic thinkers: the modern journalist and mystic Hillel Zeitlin (1871–1942), and the contemporary theologian Arthur Green.

good book
"God in All Moments," which is even slimmer than its number of pages (165) would suggest, is a sampling of hanhagot, or brief statements of wisdom.

Readers who already have a basic familiarity with Hasidic spirituality will gain little from this book. And even those who are looking for an introduction to Hasidism will probably find this slender work to be disappointly superficial.

The concept of translating, editing and organizing hanhagot and pairing each one with an explanatory, introductory commentary was a good one. The problem is that the commentaries are minimalist in the extreme.

If you do pick up this book -- not that I would advise it -- don't skip the two appendices of modern hanhagot. Some of the most inspiring ideas in the book are found there.
This collection does what a good, contemporary gathering of Hasidic writings should do, give us the kind of teachings we want, while leaving out the dross and chauvinism of the originals. Also, anyone who has tried to wade through the writings of Reb Dov of Mezeritch, for example (found in this volume), will appreciate this collection for doing the heavy lifting for you. Sure, this is a selective read; but all religious traditions take selectively from their history and sacred writings.

So in this sense, this collection represents Jewish Renewal and Neo-Hasidism at its finest. It presents the ideas of the Hasidic masters in a way that modern Jews can digest.
The editors have selected a small number of gems from among the many hanhagot--Hasidic spiritual instructions or practices--which are wonderful inspirations for dealing with everyday life. These is not a book of mysticism, or abstract spirituality. These short pieces (none of them more than a very short page in length) help us in dealing with real world situations. The selection and translation have clearly been done with the contemporary Western reader in mind. The addition of some hanhagot from two modern thinkers--Hillel Zeitlin and Art Green--is the crowning touch.
A wonderful little book for those of us looking for guidance from Jewish tradition in dealing with the vicissitudes of daily life.
