Mythology: Images & Insights" by Stephen L. Harris and Gloria Platzner I do not have any major regrets. As for the analysis of the classical myths provided by Harris and Platzner, I would say that it skews a bit higher than the undergraduate level.

Classical Mythology: Images and Insights grew out of the authors' many years of teaching Greek and Roman myth to undergraduates at California State University, Sacramento. Unique among textbooks on this topic, our book approaches the study of myth through complete works of Greco-Roman literature, including six complete Greek dramas and generous excerpts from the narratives of Homer, Hesiod, Virgil, and Ovid, and through carefully-chosen examples of Classical works of art, both painting and sculpture. Shipping was fast and book was good quality. My only reason for giving this 4 Stars was the disc that came with it was not compatible with a modern computer processor therefore it was unusable.
It had all the information I needed and was clean and intact when I received it. A good quality used book.
I am disappointed that a reviewer brought down the rating of this magnificent book with a review that is unbelievably off-target. As a Greek mythology instructor in continuing education and writer of books utilizing myth, and as psychotherapist who relates myth to the process of human transformation, I find this book to be one of the most in-depth and meaningful guides to Greek mythology available - out of many dozens that I have read.

The focus is not just upon learning the myths and stories, but penetrating to their deeper meanings. This involves understanding them in the context in which they evolved, and also in a way which speaks to us today.

The questions and commentaries are particularly thought-provoking but above the level of junior high school and most high school students. Basically, this book is college level and beyond - for those who wish to understand not only greek mythology but also its implications and relevance. A reader can easily ignore the questions, and only read some of the chapters to read, and still benefit.
I use it in my own introductory college course on mythology for two reasons. First the amount of primary materials covered allows one to forgo lots of other books being ordered, a consideration for academia at this point in time. Second, the controversal interpretations of ancient society and the meaning of the myths can be balanced by either the teacher of Powell's "Classical Myth" book. I think that for the college level, this exposure to different views is valuable because it challenges students to think. Not useful beyond the introductory level though.
