The Panic of 1857 was a financial panic in the United States caused by the declining international economy and over-expansion of the domestic economy. Because of the interconnectedness of the world economy by the 1850s, the financial crisis that began in late 1857 was the first worldwide economic crisis. In Britain, the Palmerston government circumvented the requirements of the Bank Charter Act 1844, which required gold and silver reserves to back up the amount of money in circulation.

Situating the 1857 Indian uprising within an imperial context, Jill C. . Bender traces its ramifications across the four different colonial sites of Ireland, New Zealand, Jamaica, and southern Africa. Bender argues that the 1857 uprising shaped colonial Britons' perceptions of their own empire, revealing the possibilities of an integrated empire that could provide the resources to generate and 'justify' British power. Ranging across colonial contexts, it explores the imperial implications of 1857, taking the story of the uprising outwards beyond empire, and connecting together Britain, India and empire in fascinating ways. Clare Anderson - University of Leicester.

Most studies of the 1857 Uprising look at the causes, the course of events, and the consequences. Spatially too the contributors to this volume go beyond India to locate 1857 within the emerging trend of global history. The essayists do not fall within any single school. It goes before 1857 and focuses on the first half of the 19th century to look for the presence of long-term structural factors (if any) behind the momentous events of 1857. The heterogeneous outlook of the contributors is indeed a strength of this volume as it widens the methodological traits and empirical base of essays.
The Uprising of 1857. In it Roy focuses on the involvement of the rebel Marathas and Bundela Rajputs and the role of the three kingdoms of Orchha, Jhansi and Datia, both before and during the uprising. There is perhaps no event in the long history of the British empire in India that continues to exert so strong and abiding a fascination as the great uprising of 1857. Susan Gole provides a hithertofore unexplored analysis in her 'Maps for the Uprising of 1857'. The cartographic images accompanying her article are particularly unique and fascinating.
