The successful management of farmed deer has several basic requirements. Among them are a knowledge of the industry;an understanding of the availability of the animals and a grasp of the biology of the species involved;an ability to handle the animals and a thorough understanding of the nutritional needs of the stock;and an awareness of the types of disease to which the animals are susceptible. The requirements may vary from season to season and among different cohorts. Biology confinement deer domestication handling management systems nutrition reproduction.

A deer farm (technically a ranch) is a fenced piece of land suitable for grazing that is populated with deer species, such as elk, moose, reindeer, or especially white-tailed deer, raised as livestock. New Zealand is the largest supplier of farm-raised venison. As of 2006, New Zealand had approximately 3,500 intensive deer farms, with an estimated stock of . million deer.

Deer farming was a diversification from his developing ‘Gun City’ business. As Gun City grew David had less time to devote to his big elk and in 2014 sold the last of his deer. He bought his first elk from John Barber: Goliath, Young Manitoba, Top Gun and a little dark weaner bull that David called Cassius. So many people helped me along the way, especially Terry Beardsmore, Steve Nettleton, Jim McPhee, Winston Day, Neville Cunningham, Brian Kenton and Keith Neylon.
