Even if you disagree with the theme he throws interesting light on many aspects of Romanesque and Gothic art and architecture; the more of the building you have seen the more interesting it gets. I found this book very hard to read thirty years ago, and much more interesting now, after I have had time to see a few more of the many buildings he refers t. .

Henri Focillon (7 September 1881 – 3 March 1943) was a French art historian. He was Director of the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Lyon. Professor of Art History at the University of Lyon, at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Lyon, at the Sorbonne, at the Collège de France and then in the United States, where he went into exile and taught at Yale University.
