As my mother, Charlotte Zolotow, used to describe it, sympathetically, meaning it as under the weather. Or chicken à la King, over toast. Creamed chicken, with little bits of canned red pimento in it here in there. Maybe a few frozen peas. And, maybe because I hurt and thus don’t have my usual immunity to the seductions of the past, I find myself thinking longingly about her, or at least this aspect of he. Depending on how punk I was feeling as a child, her observing that you felt punk also indicated the appearance of food you got only when you were sick. Maybe brought up on a tray to your be. Or noodles in one of two forms

Charlotte Zolotow graces the pages of this gentle book of poetry with imagery and magic as she details the changing seasons from a child's point of view. From Winter Bits "There is a special kind of quiet/every household knows/we hear it in our sleep/the first night it snows.

This is a quote from the book that has become part of our family lore. My 17-year-old asked me yesterday if we still have a copy of NALM. Sadly, we don't, but she told me that me reading it to her is a strong childhood memory. It's also a strong mothering memory for me.

Even though it reinforces traditional gender roles (the mom is cleaning house and the little girl wants her mom to play with her), the more impressive thing is how the mom handles the little girl with good humor. Recommended to parents.
Charlotte Zolotow is one of the best children's authors ever. She blends humor, empathy, and intelligence masterfully.
Great book to help kids understand that most people do have a lot of mundane housekeeping that has to be done.
