While the story of Magellan is interesting in itself, I was more interested in the background given by Zweig in his introduction about how he came to write the book. It was something I could relate to. The book came about because of what we might call today a first world problem. I choose this book because many years ago I read several books by Stefan Zweig (Czech translations) and I liked them a lot. It may be that my taste has changed or that Zweig's style is more suited for fiction than for historical works. I think Magallanes and his time are pictured vividly and probably quite accurately.
Stefan Zweig is very good at pointing out all the details without blemishing the story and making it sound didactic. 2 people found this helpful. He is the one who named the Pacific Ocean ( peaceful sea ) for the calmness of its water and the lack of wind.
Stefan Zweig is one of the best writers of XX century and I would recommend reading this book to anyone interested . Fascinating history + the Zweig style. Very interesting and revealing about the times and personalities of Magellan and his world. One person found this helpful.
