Brock depicts Rodham coming of age in the 1960s, growing up in a conservatative suburb of Chicago, Illinois . Brock meticulously moves through this period of professional triumph, setbacks and personal anguish within a rocky partnership caused by Clnton's peccadilloes.

Brock depicts Rodham coming of age in the 1960s, growing up in a conservatative suburb of Chicago, Illinois, having an early education in Republican politics. Her political conversion can be summed up in a line from her 1969 Wellesley College commencement address: "And the challenge now is to practice politics as the art of making what appears to be impossible, possible.

The Seduction of Hillary Rodham is a 1996 book about the early years of Hillary Rodham Clinton written by once-conservative attack writer, later-liberal media watch dog and Clintons supporter David Brock. The book was written during the advent of Brock's political evolution, thus contains a mixed ideological viewpoint.

The book became a major New York Times bestseller and was a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. In a replay of the hearings, Brock's book incited heated nationwide debate for months.

No public figure in contemporary life has elicited more polarized reactions than Hillary Rodham Clinton. The first presidential spouse who pursued a major policymaking role, the beleaguered first lady has been a heroine and role model to her feminist allies-and a malevolent, power-mad shrew to her conservative foes.

Having read The Seduction. I feel like I know Hillary Rodham Clinton better. I also feel like, in spite of what I would call her political shortcomings, that I like her more and understand her better. Also, from the way things went down according to Brock, Hillary more or less already was President. Jan 05, 2019 Charles Tatum, Jr. rated it really liked it.

Main article: The Seduction of Hillary Rodham. David Brock the Road Warrior of the Right is dead. After the success of The Real Anita Hill, Simon & Schuster's cused Free Press subsidiary paid Brock a large advance to write a book about Hillary Clinton. The expectation was that it would be a takedown in the style of his writings on Anita Hill and Bill Clinton.

No public figure in contemporary life has elicited more polarized reactions than Hillary Rodham Clinton. The first presidential spouse who pursued a major policy-making role, the beleaguered First Lady has been a heroine and role model to her feminist allies -- and, to her conservative foes, a malevolent, power-mad shrew. Is she Bill Clinton's greatest asset, or his greatest liability?

The Seduction of Hillary Rodham is the story of one strong-willed woman's struggle to maintain her personal and political integrity in the face of powerfully seductive forces: the temptations of exercising unencumbered political power in a one-party state; and above all, the appeal of Bill Clinton, a charismatic, talented, but deeply flawed man who may have been both the best and worst thing that ever happened to Hillary Rodham. With unparalleled depth, David Brock describes in explicit detail what Hillary has done to ensure Bill's meteoric rise to the top of American politics. Along the way, Hillary comes to terms with the strains in her marriage and undergoes multiple makeovers for the sake of an unprecedented political partnership. She plays an extensive role in staffing the Clinton White House and shaping its agenda, but her vaunted health care initiative ends in spectacular collapse and much of the still-brewing Whitewater scandal is laid at her door.

Concluding that Hillary is neither the selfless and untarnished icon that her allies would portray, nor the scheming Lady Macbeth of conservative demonology, Brock illuminates the character and actions of one of America's most poorly understood and unfairly maligned public figures.

This was an interesting look into Hillary's life up to the mid 1990's. The book was just published before President Bill Clinton's re-election in 1996. Still it was able to foreshadow that Hillary would one day run for President. It paints a picture of her being heavily involved in her husband's political rise to the Presidency(for better or worse). Even then there were broiled in controversy's that although never technically caught in wrong doing(besides Monica Lewinsky) the multitude of events gave the impression of wrong doing or at least to make them seem sketchy. This reputation has given their opponents fuel for decades and even to her latest run for President.
This was a gift. Recipient seemed to like it though.
This is the highly-researched story of a very bright, driven, hard-working woman who hitched her political ambitions to the rising star that was Bill Clinton. The author manages to sympathetically portray a power couple who are so arrogantly sure that they know America's greater good that they can justify using questionable means to achieve it--although the author concludes that it is Bill Clinton who uses questionable practices and relies on his wife to clean up his messes. There may, indeed, be a "vast right-wing conspiracy" against the Clintons, but they do not help themselves with their conduct--including, most recently, the charging by the former Secretary of State of obscenely lucrative speaking fees. I wish I could feel more empathy for this woman who may well be our first female President, and Obeosh her well, but I don't believe she's entitled to claim the moral high ground.
Changed me from a Hillary hater to a Hillary admirer. Powerful book that debunks much of the rights hatred for this woman and her mission to make this country a better place for average Americans
A fascinating look from another point of view than the Clinton autobiography. A real eye opener.
You want to know where this all began..read this book!
Hillary was mentally seduced by Saul Alinsky and his handbook for leftist radicals has been the underlying focus of her political agenda. She and Bill are classic sociopaths who will lie, cheat, steal to achieve their goals.
At the time of its hardcover release - 1996 - David Brock was the top-gun reporter for The American Spectator, writing several exposes on Anita Hill & Bill Clinton and penning a best-selling 1993 book, The Real Anita Hill.

With a dour photo of Hillary Rodham gracing the front cover of the hardcover edition - a la Hill's picture on the less-than-flattering biography - it appeared at first glance that Brock was positioned to attack the then First Lady through new revelations and late-breaking angles.

In this case, the picture is quite deceptive, as Brock writes a straight-forward unauthorized biography of Rodham, where journalism pushes sensationalism into the gutter, with a focus on the core values which led her into the political arena before her marriage to Bill Clinton.

Brock depicts Rodham coming of age in the 1960s, growing up in a conservatative suburb of Chicago, Illinois, having an early education in Republican politics. Her political conversion can be summed up in a line from her 1969 Wellesley College commencement address: "And the challenge now is to practice politics as the art of making what appears to be impossible, possible."

What appeared to be a fast-track to a career in politics - after a stint as a staffer on the House Committee on the Judiciary during the Watergate investigation - Rodham abandons this quest, marries Clinton and moves to Arkansas. Brock meticulously moves through this period of professional triumph, setbacks and personal anguish within a rocky partnership caused by Clnton's peccadilloes.

By striding past banner headlines and finger-pointing accusations, Brock shows a profile in courage due to following the whims of the heart, which is a timeless tale.
