This new 2nd Edition completely updates the text NEJM described as "well on its way to becoming the Gray's Anatomy of Physical Diagnosis." Expanded and revised coverage, clear organization and numerous illustrations help students move from the classroom to the role of an empathetic physician skilled in listening and responding to patients. The text emphasizes the doctor-patient relationship. It continues the first edition's integration of all aspects of physical diagnosis: patient history taking, physical examination, signs and symptoms and their pathophysiology, and it retains its unique address of the physical examination's utility. Illustrations (including 20 new photographs in full colour) provide easier visual recognition of conditions. New chapter on the geriatric patient teaches students how to address this population's special health needs. New chapter on the obstetric patient. Each chapter begins with a review of the anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiologic states of the respective organ system. Then, the techniques of examination and the major symptoms of that organ system are presented. Students learn about the pathophysiologic causes of symptoms. Each chapter discusses the impact of disease on a patient's life and heightens student empathy and understanding for the patient's condition. Covers medical terminology to promote word-building skills and interviewing skills so students may obtain accurate information from their patients.
This book is a goldmine. However I wish the delivery people would deliver it to my door and not to the front desk of where I live. The distance is the same. I have some paralysis from Multiple Sclerosis and it makes it very difficult to pick it up and the front desk just rectilinear sent out an note that their people are the for our protection and not to be delivery boys. This whole medical thing is a medical mess the hospital don't want you the rehabs want you but nickel and dime you for everything and the same goes for many folks in business. This is why America is going down hill. W So many of us have become takers. It is not like years ago when folks used to look out for each other. I am a retired physician nanny times poor farmers would come to my house at 6AM for a few stitches cause they couldn't afford the clinic bill even though they w worked from sun up to sun down getting miming wage from the government to trash their crops. Nab I charged $5 to see them up fn the really poor no charge. America we need to recapture that spirit. Teach our kids oo out to be takers but to think of others even if only a smile to another kid who has a hard time fitting in. OFFER THEM A meaningful ALTERNATIVE TO HANGING OUT AND Good Forbid drugging and drinking their life away let us adults be the example then with mutual respect for all maybe then we can reclaim Our American values in a world that has all by it forgotten God. All it takes us a th into act if Charity to start that ripple effect, like dropping off a book to a disabled persons door. None of us is insignificant in reclaiming not only America but entire suffering world.
Everything I see on TV is about death, evil, satanism, It is time to renounce these things and return to the Lord. Spend just 5 minutes day silently listening to him in your heart and watch your peace return. Laughing this ii is more than I have said in years.
Together, the text and the accompanying DVD make a very informative review of basic clinical techniques "à l'américain". By reading this book, both foreign national and American IMGs can appreciate clinical and cultural differences when dealing with American patients and colleagues. For older IMGs like myself, this is a good review of what we learned many years ago. I highly recommend it for all physicians and physicians-to-be.
Although there were problems with the DVD on my Sony BlueRay DVD Player (some parts wouldn't play correctly), it worked perfectly on my late 2010 Macbook Pro Integrated DVD player.
This is a very good book to have if you really want to develop top notch assessment skills. You will find a lot of stuff in here that many doctors and nurse practitioners don't do anymore---not because the skills are obsolete but because they don't have time to do detailed head to to assessments on every patient anymore. But its still good to know how. The pictures and videos are more than worth the price of the book.
Dr. Swartz' book is a must-have for any medical student or resident. It is often difficult to find enough time to learn the physical exam on the wards, and having a detailed book like this to fall back on is essential. Oftentimes, the people teaching you are doing the exam wrong, or are simply not doing it at all. Swartz' book is well-organized, has great pictures, and will walk you through any physical exam step that you want to gain more confidence in. The book is a great read and teaches a lot about pathophysiology and the medical interview as well. You won't regret buying this book!
I am at the end of my FNP program and this book was recommended by my preceptor. I like it a lot better than Bates and I wish I'd known about it when I started my program 3 years ago.
