This is a wonderful book, containing works by a plethora of major authors, from Hawthorne to Chandler and everyone in between. Especially noteworthy are the stories included by authors known more for their novels than short stories (like Tolstoy, Melville, and Faulkner). This alphabetically arranged anthology presents 40 major authors in depth through 93 stories and 43 commentaries on the stories by the writers themselves.
The book being offered here is not the book of short stories. It is the teachers guide to the book that actually contains the stories. The book I tried to purchase with the same title has over 1400 pages of stories. The book they are selling here has 177 pages of notes on those stories. Hopefully this will keep someone from making the same mistake I did.
Whether you choose this book because it's required for scholastic coursework or simply for leisure reading, this is an excellent collection of short stories and commentaries. Very nice editing!
