Book by Champlin, Tim
This was a gift for my husband who loves Tim Champlin so I know he's really enjoyed it. I haven't read the book so I can't answer the other questions.
Dakota Gold is the second of Tim Champlin’s Matt Tierney books, following immediately on the heels of Summer of the Sioux. In fact, Matt and his three friends are still racing away from the Army on the same horses they were riding on the last page of Summer of the Sioux.
The years are 1876 (fall) through 1877 (spring). Matt and his friend Curt Wilder, a former cavalry officer who deserted rather than face trumped up court martial charges by a superior officer, take us through a winter in Deadwood City and fall and spring taking gold out of creek gravel with a hand-powered sluice.
A gang of well-coordinated robbers provides most of the action. Perhaps oddly, for a western, the character development is as compelling as the action.
Tierney is officially a newspaper reporter, writing for a Chicago newspaper and sometimes for Harper’s Weekly, which gives him a journalist’s license to be nosy.
For nitpickers (spoiler alert) there’s a little conflagration at the end of the book that really happened. By artistic license it happens in this book in 1877. In history books it happened in 1879.

The Matt Tierney books in order (I think): Summer of the Sioux (set 1876); Dakota Gold (1877); Staghorn (1877); Shadow Catcher (1877?); Great Timber Race (1878); Iron Trail (1879).
