In Whitehead’s stories you encounter supernatural or evil beings which are unique to this kind of fiction. The combination of Whitehead’s early death and the fact that his stories had only appeared in pulp magazines, is the main reason that his name and his work is not more well known.

In Whitehead’s stories you encounter supernatural or evil beings which are unique to this kind of fiction. There is, for example the jumbee from the story of the same name; this is a corpse-like spirit that hovers in the air, and there is also a sheen who is an old woman who turns into a were-bitch. His fascinating tales are certainly as effective and meritorious as those of Lovecraft and Algernon Blackwood, for example.

West India Lights," "Jumbee and Other Voodoo Tales," "The Black Beast and Other Voodoo Tales," and a collection of other stories. A friend of Lovecraft, Whitehead also wrote for Weird Tales. Whilst I enjoyed most of the stories in the book, especially the voodoo tales, I found the longer stories slow with too much unnecessary detail. This book is great value and a good read.

Ever since seeing Henry S Whitehead's "Jumbee and Other Tales" listed in the top 200 horror books of all time I've wanted to own a copy. They are tricky to track down and when you do they are quite expensive (I've been quoted anywhere from £16 to £50 for a copy) So I was delighted to hear that Wordsworth Publishing house was to release this book which includes the aforementioned "Jumbee" and all for only £. 9. Some really decent tales in this huge collection of the stories by Henry S Whitehead. Sadly not much biographical information (and not much biographical either) is included but many of the stories are from Weird Tale.

To me these are some of the best stories of this type ever written. Years ago I owned the arkham house collection West India Lights. I loved it but somehow lost it during moving. And now I have it again and all his other great tales at a very good price. This book is actually worth much more. I am over joyed getting this and I will not lose this book. Get this. Its great. I promise that if you enjoy tales from the old days of Weird Tales magazine of the 3 0s and 40s these are some of the best. As the title says Voodoo Tales: The Ghost Stories of Henry S. Whitehead.
Truer words were never spoken. Get this great collection of supernatural short stories.
For those people unable to afford the pretty but expensive Arkham House editions of Henry S. Whitehead..

This thick volume contains both the Arkham House Collections 'Jumbee and Other Uncanny Tales' (1944) and 'West India Lights' (1946) All the stories are here, although Jumbee does not include the R. H. Barlow introduction.

But for what you get this is fantastic value. Congratulations to Wordsworth for producing this volume.
