Gotthold Ephraim Lessing (/ˈlɛsɪŋ/; German: ; 22 January 1729 – 15 February 1781) was a German writer, philosopher, dramatist, publicist and art critic, and an outstanding representative of the Enlightenment era. Hearing of Emilia’s betrothal, the Prince gives full reign to his Chamberlain to do whatever he might to prevent the marriage from taking place. Discovering that the ceremony is later that day a hurried gang of highwaymen are dispatched to carriage-jack the cortege, but the ensuing fight ends in the shooting of the bridegroom. The genius of such a move, and what makes it feel very modern, is that Lessing refuses to let us see the Count engaging with Emilia, we are simply told he has her ‘safe’, yet anything could be happening.
