SYNOPSIS: This is a weaving book that is geared towards inspiration. The images are bright and colors and there is very little text to break up the flow. The text is there to guide you with material ideas and how to implement the fabrics woven.

These patterns are created with stripes of two colors in both the warp and the weft. These two colorsalthough lying next to each other both horizontally and verticallynever actually weave together. Woven fabrics are popular again as we embrace pattern, colour and lashings of texture. These days design can lack that. Historic design: Cymbeline, created by Tibor for the Festival of Britain, is popular again. The yarns in Tibor fabrics have been put through a machine to create interesting shapes such as loops or boucles. Her Arundel rug (from £195, margoselby. com) makes a statement without being overpowering. Woven textiles have an alluring complexity.

Book is informative, adds perspective. But since buying it I have found another book with better info on the topic and online video via Interweave which is outstanding, both costing less than this book. Not disappointed that I bought this book but now know I could have done better.
I bought this book even thought it did get some poor reviews. And now I am sorry I did. It took forever for me to figure out the tie-up and treadling. And the color sequence for the weft still remains a mystery. Is that little weft wrapping key on the side really all I get for any color changes. I was drawn to this book by "texture" in the title. Only to discover that the texture is created exclusively by changes in yarn size, not weave structure. I would not recommend this book.
Offers a creative approach to choosing warp and weft yarns as well as sleying the reed. Most of the patterns are not my taste but I am glad to see what is possible.
Just OK
A long time I hesitated leaving a negative review, but now, a year since purchase, my opinion regarding this book have not changed.
I can only recommend this book to those people who are looking for examples of what NOT to do when weaving a colourful and/or textured weave.
Most fabric samples look like they have been put through a food processor- a muddled array of yarns and horrible over the top colour combinations that left me wondering if the author was not only colour blind but blind altogether.
Nothing in this book inspires on any level.
Beautiful weave structures are obscurred by bizarre yarn choices in bizarre colours.
You will not be taught about weave structures and what they do, or how you can enhance the subtlety of a weave structure with certain colour choices in your yarn.
The photographs of the samples are unclear in scale- you have no idea how big or small that sampled area actually is.
If you want to learn about textures in weaving I recommend "Mastering weave structures" by Sharon Alderman, and for colour inspiration simply look around in nature or any book on textiles by John Gillow.
Margo Selby should perhaps consider that often less is more.
The book is well laid out. I like the pictures of the yarns next to the woven pieces. The color groups are not quite what speak to me, but there is a lot of useful info in the book.
good
Very good ideas for pattern and colour.
