Fighters Over Israel Story of the Israeli Air Force from the War of Independence to the Bekaa Valley. Wojciech Butrycz, Tomasz A. Bartyzel. Author: Lon O. Nordeen.

The Bekaa Valley success was long in the making. Israel's small but elite air force dominated the Six Day War of June 1967, pulling off one of the most successful surprise attacks of all time. Flying about 3,300 sorties, the IAF smashed the air forces of Egypt, Jordan, and Syria. The three Arab nations, taken together, lost around 400 aircraft on the ground and in the air. Thereafter, the Egyptian, Syrian, and Jordanian armies were routed in the Sinai, Golan Heights, and West Bank.

The History of the Israel Air Force begins in May 1948, shortly after the formation of the State of Israel

The History of the Israel Air Force begins in May 1948, shortly after the formation of the State of Israel. Following Israel's declaration of independence on May 14, its pre-state national institutions transformed into the agencies of a state, and on May 26, 1948, the Israeli Air Force was formed. Beginning with a small collection of light aircraft, the force soon transformed into a comprehensive fighting force.

Israeli agents negotiated the purchase of Avia S-199s from the Czechoslovak government in defiance of an arms embargo that Israel faced at the time. 25 aircraft were obtained and all but two were eventually delivered. The first examples arrived on May 20, 1948, six days after Israel's declaration of independence and five days after the commencement of hostilities by Egypt. Retrieved September 8, 2011.

I am still reading this book at night before I sleep. What I like most is the easy style of writing. Currently I am reading about Spitfires and Avia in the IAF. Also the unique methods the Israelis used to get aircraft to Israel due to arms embargos is so interesting that I can hardly put the book down. The author's method of telling a situation and then adding an actual pilot story related to the situation, is fantastic. This book really is a must have in my opinion because it details evrything in simple language and there are maps to get a minds eye picture. There are 2 sections of B&W picture plates covering various aircraft and scenes from the Auster to the E-2C Hawkeye and 1 section of drawing plates. The drawing plate section is a series of cutaway paintings by Ken Kotik that are interesting. They show for example, the IAF Meteor vs. The EAF Vampire with each shown flying and bits of the plane cutaway and the weapons shown next to the plane, in air!...very stylized and cool. So I highly recommend this book and hope you get it and enjoy it as much as I am. I hope you can get one with the paper cover on it as the illustrations on front and back are cool (as shown in the picture above).
This book was well written. I thoroughly enjoyed how it provided details of air activities (air-to-air combat, air-to-ground, etc.) as well as providing personal accounts of air combat, gave insight to the difficulties of obtaining air assets from other nations, especially in the early days of Israel creation, and how Israel viewed the performance of these aircraft.
I wanted to read about the fight in the Bekaa Valley but the book only had a page about it. I wanted a book written by Israeli pilots, mainly about the airwar from the 6 days war till now. Otherwise it is a good book.
When I looked at Amazon.com and didn't find a review of Lon Nordeen's "Fighters Over Israel", I was very surprised since this book is one of the few really great accounts of the Heyl Ha'Avir's dinstinguished and colorful history along with similar books by Salvador Huertas, Peter Mersky, and others.
In just a few words or so, this book is considered a classic of its' type with engrossing background, history, and captivating personal accounts that the author gleened from interviews with Heyl Ha'Avir pilots. The novel was published in 1990 and fully covers all of the major conflicts from the 1948 War for Israeli independance to the 1982 Operation Peace for Galilee and several aerial incidents between 1982 and the book's 1990 publishing date.
Perhaps one of the greatest aspects of the novel is Lon Nordeen's insight into how Israel managed to build a barely third-world air force into one of the world's preemminant world air powers. The secret in a word is "people." The Heyl Ha'Avir's recruitment and training programs are truly innovative and interesting beyond words to read about.
The book's three picture inserts have some great photographs and illustrations as well.
If you are a fan of the Heyl Ha'Avir, the IDF, jet warfare, miltary history, or just want to read some great accounts of jet combat in the Middle East, definitely purchase and enjoy this book.
