Ubu Roi" is surely Jarry's most widely known work, and it is an excellent and fun read indeed. The translation here is by Barbara Wright, whose translations (of Jarry, Queneau, and others) I generally enjoy. I'm sure this one is equally good, but it is difficult to tell. 1991 22nd printing includes; Ubu Roi, a Drama in 5 acts; The Song of Disembraining by Alfred Jarry; 2 essays on the theatre by Jarry - "Questions of the Theatre" and "Of the Futility of the "Theatrical" In the Theatre";2 portraits of author by L. Lantier and F. A. Cazals;several drawings by Jarry and Pierre Bonnard;204 drawings by Franciszka Themerson.

Let's go. ― Alfred Jarry, Ubu Ro. Papa Ubu: Yes, gentlemen, but however beautiful it may be, it can't compare with Poland. ― Alfred Jarry, Ubu Roi. tags: avant-garde, dada, surrealism. Because if there weren't any Poland, there wouldn't be any Poles! ― Alfred Jarry.

Ubu Roi, Alfred Jarry ; translated by Beverly Keith and G. Legman. Ubu Roi’s literary significance lies in its poetic quality. Its uninhibited tastelessness is practically sublime, and it is a lot funnier than Hamlet (another possible source), in which corpses also pile up. For the Théâtre de l’Oeuvre, which mounted the 1896 production, Ubu Roi was, in Steegmuller’s words, the catastrophe that made it famous. The occasion became legendary, a high point of the pre-1914 avant-garde.

Book by Alfred, Jarry
Alfred Jarry a du talent et cette piece parle bien de la dictature de façon drôle et légère! A lire
How great it is to download a play to Kindle, then have the text handy for the long flight to France! As preparation for a performance at the Comédie Française did just that, and the text was free besides. Advantageous to read a play beforehand so as to enjoy fully the action onstage and indeed to anticipate its important points. Same goes for Amphitryon, seldom performed, which fortunately was playing when I was there.
