Journalist Nicholas Webley made a remarkable find in a house in Norfolk - a diary kept during the Second World War, scribbled for the most part in school exercise books and on scraps of paper, and written, as it turned out, by Betty Armitage, a seamstress born in the 1880s. In her diary, the events of the war years are experienced in the country; privation relieved by the occasional poached pheasant, upheaval as thousands of young US servicemen "invade" East Anglia, quiet heroes and small-time rural villains. The era springs to life in the pages of Betty's diary - funny, touching, and unaffectedly vivid.

I am an aficionado of World War II diaries and this is one of the best I have ever read! Betty is so down to earth, shrewd, and just caring that I love her. She is not afraid to mention things that others never do, such as benefiting from the Black Market and from poaching. She isn't busy with the "war effort" as organized by the government but she is busy caring for her neighbors and friends. Her observations are right on target, as we can see in hindsight, and I thoroughly enjoyed every word.

I really enjoyed the book and love the people,felt like I was in the midst of that neighborhood. I have read several of the diaries from the mass observation project and Betty was one of the most like able,would have enjoyed her as a neighbor. Well worth reading it if you enjoy history and the people who are in the midst of it.

This was a very interesting book. I wish there had been more pictures of Betty and her friends. There were a lot of pictures, though. I felt I knew the people who lived in Norfolk with her in her neighborhood by the end of the book. Wish I knew what happened to her after the war.
