My daughter and I both love this book, and everyone whose read it to her finds it interesting and educational.
This is such a great book to teach children how fossils form. I'm a third grade teacher, and my students always love, love, love this book!
Many dinosaur books start in the present, and even if they talk about fossils, they don't really talk about how fossils come to be. I like that this one starts with a dinosaur who has an unfortunate hunting accident and dies and sinks into a streambed, then covers the fossilization process, the centuries of being covered by rock, then being discovered, then being dug up by a team led by a paleontologist, ending with the dinosaur being prepared for display in a museum. I like this a little better than Aliki's Fossils Tell of Long Ago, but that book is a little better for a 4-5 year old, vs. Monster Bones is best for ages 5 - 7. (I teach a kids' science class for ages 3 - 7. You can learn about all our hands-on dinosaur activities and crafts at InventorsOfTomorrow.
My four year old has so many dinosaur books, I really did not want to add another. But Monster Bones is the first one I have found that tells the story of how fossils are created. It has enough just enough science without dumbing it down. I really appreciate this book in contrast to the encyclopedic type books which are informative but get rather mundane reading pages of dinosaur description after dinosaur description.
This book is my son's favorite. After checking it out over and over from the library we bought it. We read it every night. This tale of a dinosaur and how his body becomes fossils is wonderfully written. This book has lots of great information, but with a cute story!
