What could be better than sharing a birthday cake with the friends who helped to bake it? In this whimsical, cumulative birthday tale, a host of generous friends helps a small child assemble the ingredients for a delicious cake. Full of fun and good cheer, Helen Oxenbury's joyful picture book makes any day a celebration.
I am surprised this book has such little review. It’s a GEM! My son is 6 now and does not care for this. However was a different story when he was 1-4 years old. Many many many readings over. The illustrations, the words, the idyllic story of a little kid making his birthday cake from scratch. Each ingredient is collected by and by to make the final cake. Beautiful rhythmic verses, no over powering illustrations that lil ones can follow and enjoy. This is my number one birthday gift option for kids aged 1-4. Great for a boy or a girl as the kid in the book is not defined as a boy or girl, in illustrations or otherwise. I have had parents come back to tell me how much their kid enjoyed the gift ! Get this one you won’t regret it and will be part of kids library for ever !
I'm a retired teacher (with Reading Certification) and this dear book is my "go-to"
gift for a toddler and preschooler's birthday. This charming story is the opposite of The Little Red Hen. In the latter, none of the hen's "friends" will help her to make bread (thus, in the end, she eats alone). In Helen Oxenbury's adorable book, all the birthday child's friends DO help him/her(cleverly illustrated so it can be a moppet boy or girl) by providing the ingredients to make him/her a birthday cake. The message is one of sharing and the delightful outcome is that they all eat the cake they made together! (A special "gift" to the reader at the end is a recipe "To Make Your Own Birthday Cake!". It's good!)
My child is obsessed with this book. It was a great choice to prepare her for her own birthday. We've given it to other kids, too, and they universally love it.
Good for kids to know borthdays are special and baking is one great way to celebrate (and learn with) it. The personal problem is that it did not come with the recipe as the board book version we used to have (and gave away on soneone's bday).
Bought this for my granddaughter's first birthday! Was a perfect addition to her gifts. This can be read to her year after year!
This is basically the story of the Little Red Hen -- but I like it better. It models sharing, instead of the fruits of selfishness. It teaches ingredients to bake a cake and has a recipe at the end for doing it yourself. And it is all about birthdays, which little kids are familiar with.
Love this book and my son did also. It has a recipe for a cake in the back, which makes the book interactive and fun for him.
I love it - got it for my nieces first birthday
