I read these stories to my kids, and they are fantastic. I recommend this book to anyone who likes Celtic fairytales, Old Scottish stories or is a storyteller and wants to expand their repertoire. The stories are well written and keep the reader glued to the end. If you read to kids, this is a great book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I bought the Kindle edition of this to read with my 6-year-old grandson while we were adventuring in Scotland. He was thoroughly engrossed with each story...only one he didn't like with a sad ending. The writing somewhat challenged his ability to follow the story with the Scottish language of telling the story and evoked the magic and feeling of Scotland. It was a great choice.
These are some of the classic tales of Scotland told in a very simple and short format. Good for kids, but not so much for an adult studying mythology.
I am Scottish from way back, but never heard most of these tales. Some are not even similar to
other fairy tales from Scotland or other countries.
Usually there will be a similarity with another country's folk tales. These were refreshing. I do enjoy
reading stories from other countries and ancient times.
Gave to my niece heading to college in Scotland--she loved it.
Exactly what I was looking for. It arrived in a timely fashion.
The vendor was easy to do business with.
The eight Scottish fairy tales contained in this paperback are delightful adventures. Virtues such as loyalty, honesty, and wisdom are the characteristics of even the least of heros. This Dover edition, first published in 1997, is a new selection of fairy tales from *Wonder Tales from Scottish Myth and Legend,* originally published by Frederick A. Stokes Co., New York, in 1917. John Green provides illustrations specifically for this edition. The tales are: "Battle of the Fairy Kings," "The Princess of Land-under-Waves," "Conall and the Thunder Hag," "The Story of Finlay and the Giants," "The Story of Michael Scott," "In the Kingdom of Seals," "The Maid-of-the-Wave," and "The Land of Green Mountains." This is indeed an excellent read.
If you need interesting tales to tell young children, this group of fairy tales can easily be adapted
