Bill peet - unsung genius of the golden years of disney. Published by Thriftbooks. The imagery is so striking that it set my childhood imagination on fire. I was fascinated to find out when I went to Animation school later in life that Bill Peet was one of the original story guys from the Golden Age of Disney. When we discover exactly why Chester is the "worldly" pig, the students go crazy!! This story is an excellent springboard for geography and the seven continents!! Surprise!

Chester longs to be a performer in the circus, but the road to stardom is rocky until someone discovers Chester's true "worldliness."
I've been a mother-fan of Bill Peet for 30+ years. My children grew up on them and now my grandchildren. What I like best is the life lessons and morals that are cleverly taught. The language is great fun but also stretches the vocabulary of the growing child. The stories are captivating and everybody (including the parent) can recognize some of the shortcomings in themselves. But the stories alway end with a happy lesson learned and much forgiveness all around. The art work is fantastic. I love reading to children and these books offer plenty of scope for expression and drama, which children love. Bill Pete spent 37 years working for Disney on all the animated greats from Snow White and Bambi all the way up to 101 Dalmations and everything in between. He also worked on the scripts for these movies and after reading even one of his books you can see that same incredible talent. These books should be in every home. After checking them out from the library numerous times over the many years my children were growing up, I am finally starting my own library for my grandchildren. Many of my paper-back versions fell completely apart (with not that much use) so this time it'll be all hard cover.
My husband and I read Bill Peet books to our kids when they were young...probably around ages 3-7. The stories are intriguing (for kids and for the adult reading the book), and the pictures are fun to look at. I’ve bought many of these books to give as gifts, and I’m buying some to have for our own personal collection.
The story of a young pig named chester that wants to join the circus very badly. He trys to get in any way he can, so he can show them his great acrobatic tricks. He finally balances on his nose when the train goes by to get their attention. The book is a sweet story with nice illustrations.

According to Bill Peets autobiography, this book was his favorite because it reflected his own past . The story of Chester the pigs journey to join the circus is similar to Peet's own journey as a young man to try to get work for Disney studios as an animator in his younger days. Peet did in fact become a successful animator and storymand for Disney. Roscoe the master showman in the story, is in reality Bill's old boss Walt Disney. Walt was respected by Peet, even if they had their differences. If you like Bill Peets books, be sure to read his autobiography, and this book.
Just what I was looking for! Ordering and shipping went perfectly smoothly! My sister and I loved Bill Peet's books when we were kids, and I am so happy to build a collection of them for my nieces.
Adorable story, wonderful illustrations, beautifully written.
I have taught for 44 years from 1 to 9th grade and have used Bill Peet's books in every grade. They are also great for storytelling.
Great story that I use when teaching the continents.
A Classic!
