We can't ignore our body's needs and definitely when we are under stress. I found the book an excellent reference for everyone to control depression, and the stresses of life. We all need help and even if we need to take medication, this book is also a great alternative method. I found the brain chemistry type test to be very useful and so short and easy to complete. I found the nutritional advise to be right on and the comparisons of the nutritional information to prescribed drugs to be very useful.

This book may be a great way to "fix" things. I have a hard enough time dieting, so honestly, I don't know how I could change all my eating habits to accomodate. I was very desperate to find a "way out" of depression when I bought this book. I believe it could help those that have a strong will to be disciplined. It makes sense! The quiz in the front of the book is pretty accurate. If you are willing and don't want to be medicated or try something other than medication, definitely give it a try!
It would be 5 star except that it is so much work to cull the info out of it for what is needed... Everyone I know should read and apply this info- especially if dealing with addiiction, depression, or fibro/ chronic fatigue.
Took me a few weeks to find the best balance for me. My mom was quicker in about 3 daysa feeling so much better. Highly recommended
this book has helped me a lot, in my personal journey to become independent of pharmaceutical meds, and discover a path of a healthy brain through the proper care of my body; diet, nutrition and exercise... highly recomended
I have been an admirer and follower of Dr. Lesser and his orthomolecular work for decades. His 1980 book, Nutrition and Vitamin Therapy, has been a "bible" in how I eat and supplement my diet for decades.

For this reason, I was perhaps too excited when I discovered (at this late date) his latest work (2002), The Brain Chemistry Plan (aka The Brain Chemistry Diet - I do not understand why there are two titles for the same book!).

The Brain Chemistry Plan/Diet has an intriguing self-test to determine your own type (and sub-type) of metabolism and psychology. I was pleased that the results of the test confirmed that I was just what I had anticipated I would be - a "Stoic Dreamer". The description of my character was just about perfect.

Unfortunately, the text that describes and supports the types is really MUCH more rewarding reading than the actual nutritional advice (which is the big difference from the 1980 book).

In this book, I was confused and disappointed that while Dr. Lesser acknowledges in the descriptions of my type that wheat and dairy are frequent allergens/food sensitivities (and I have tested positive for both), he still advocates them without reservation in the recommended diet for my type. Plus, he strongly recommends soy products (again, without reservation) to which I have a serious allergy - soy causes severe chronic insomnia and akathisia in me, as well as in others I know that have the same allergy, and I have read numerous reports published since 2002 that state that soy (particularly unfermented soy) poses significant hormonal problems for many besides the allergic miseries. These others who suffer soy allergy are also "Dreamers", so it seems that Dr. Lesser has really missed the mark here.

Other huge disappointments include Dr. Lesser's COMPLETE failure to even mention the following: pyroluria, a genetic metabolic problem that induces chronic deficiency of B6 and zinc, observed since the 1950s (I have this and have benefited immensely from B6 and zinc supplements - but there is nothing in Dr. Lesser's book about this); fibromyalgia, a nerve disorder that causes chronic overall pain, recognized as fully valid by the Arthritis Foundation since the 1980s and now unquestioned even by mainstream medicine; and chronic fatigue syndrome, also accepted by mainstream medicine now.

But the greatest problem with the book is that it has NO real citations to support the broad statements made by Dr. Lesser; he often uses expressions such as "studies show that...", "research has proven that...", "in a recent study..." - but there are NO citations, footnotes, or endnotes whatsoever to back up these statements - we are given NO information as to what research or what study, where or when, that his proclamations are based on. As a professor who teaches research writing to aspiring researchers, I would have to give an "F" to this use of unsupported statements.
One of the best descriptions of personality/character types. I especially loved his earth-shattering concept that mental illness isn't so much a brain chemical "imbalance" as it is a personality in ditress. This is a tremendous piece of work and discovery.
I bought this book because I was looking for ideas on how to be the most successful in both mind and body, and this book is great! It was just what I was looking for. You see it every day how nutrition can effect your moods and productivity, so it makes sense that you would want to eat the foods that are going to make your mind and body run the best.
I also liked the way the book is written. It's easy to understand and you don't have to be a doctor to figure it out. Thanks Dr. Lesser!
If you're looking for an alternative to the helpful but also harmful brain medications of this day this book is a great start. Dr. Michael Lesser is a genious of his time. It gives you a simple test to take to find wich "brain type" you have with supprising acuracy. A great find!
I absolutely loved this book. He nails the personality traits, strengths, and "in trouble" spots so much so that your jaw drops while reading. Dead on. Excellent, easy to do suggestions for increasing abilities based on strengths.
