Death on the Air and Other Stories. The Hand in the Sand.

The first two 'stories' are Ngaio Marsh discussing two of her recurring characters - Alleyn and Troy. But I definitely remember Death on the Air. This collection proves that Marsh was just as good at writing in short form as she was with full length novels

The first two 'stories' are Ngaio Marsh discussing two of her recurring characters - Alleyn and Troy. It was interesting but I don't know them so I wasn't emotionally engaged. This collection proves that Marsh was just as good at writing in short form as she was with full length novels. Death on the Air is especially good at laying out the clues and coming to a satisfying conclusion in a short space. I would certainly recommend it. As soon as I started reading this book, I realized that I'd read some of the stories before.

The only collection of Ngaio Marsh short stories, first published in 1995 to celebrate her centenary, now with two additional stories. A man dies with his hand on a radio dial. A disguised aristocrat finds murder at the opening night of a play. A cryptogram produces death in an English churchyard. These are the short cases of Scotland Yard’s Inspector Roderick Alleyn who, with his lovely wife Agatha Troy, charmed his way through more than thirty novels. The book concludes with a script written for the television series Crown Court, in which the lead was played by Joan Hickson who later became.

Every Marsh novel features Alleyn, and as one looks back at her literary career it is hard not to wonder why she never . Moving on from the miniatures, admirers of the classical murder puzzle may prefer Death on the Air, but my own favourite in this book is the television script Evil Liver.

Every Marsh novel features Alleyn, and as one looks back at her literary career it is hard not to wonder why she never moved on from writing mysteries to writing novels where there was no murder. It would seem she had no wish to move on; it was as though she could never quite summon the energy to break through into a different territory. Written in the 1970s for the series Crown Court, this work shows more clearly than any of the short stories Marsh’s gift for characterization by means of dialogue.

Money in the Morgue: The New Inspector Alleyn Mystery. Ngaio Marsh worked largely within the conventions of the golden age detective story but transcended the genre by the power of her writing, the excellent use she makes of her own experience and interests, and the rich variety of characters who people her novels. The best of her books will endure. The only collection of Ngaio Marsh short stories, first published in 1995 to celebrate her centenary, now with two additional stories.

This collection contains the short cases of Scotland Yard's Inspector Roderick Alleyn, Dame Ngaio Marsh's own account of the creation of her detective, four urbane crime tales with settings ranging from a London restaurant to the New Zealand outback, and a script for the TV series "Crown Court".
Early short story collection including (almost) debut of Allyen and Fox. Lacks depth and character of Marsh’s novels but interesting twists to each story.
Nice
Short stories are very enjoyable. I like to be able to compare the various styles of stories by the same author.
Short stories....some with Inspector Alleyn, some without. Always excellent writing in locations from New Zealand to Paris. An introduction by Ngaio Marsh on how and where she created Inspector Alleyn. Also how Troy became a character in her stories.
