The gentleman who, when I was young, bathed me at wisdom's font for nine guineas a term-no extras-used to say he never knew a boy who could do less work in more time; and I remember my poor grandmother once incidentally observing, in the course of an instruction upon the use of the Prayer-book, that it was highly improbable. that I should ever do much that I ought not to do, but that she felt convinced.

Idle Thoughts of an Idle Fellow, published in 1886, is a collection of humorous essays by Jerome K. Jerome. It was the author’s second published book and it helped establish him as a leading English humorist. While widely considered one of Jerome’s better works, and in spite of using the same style as Three Men in a Boat, it was never as popular as the latter. A second "Idle Thoughts" book, The Second Thoughts of An Idle Fellow, was published in 1898.

One or two friends to whom I showed these papers in MS. having observed that they were not half bad, and some of my relations having promised to buy the book if it ever came out, I feel I have no right to longer delay its issue. But for this, as one may say, public demand, I perhaps should not have ventured to offer these mere "idle thoughts" of mine as mental food for the English-speaking peoples of the earth. What readers ask nowadays in a book is that it should improve, instruct, and elevate. This book wouldn't elevate a cow. I cannot conscientiously recommend it for any useful purposes whatever. All I can suggest is that when you get tired of reading "the best hundred books," you may take this up for half an hour. It will be a change
A collection of short articles and musings by Jerome K Jerome. Nothing earth shattering here, but if you enjoyed Three Men in a Boat and like the style of writing peculiar to the late Victorian era then you will enjoy dipping into this book in idle moments.
I do wish this version had the hilarious dedication to his pipe in the beginning, but unfortunately it did not (no fault of the author, of course). I love Jerome K. Jerome's style of writing and sense of humor, and I wish he had written more!
Jerome K. Jerome is in the same category as P.G. Wodehouse. His stuff is great if you are into English humour, fortunately, it fits me like a well broken in tweed jacket (complete with leather elbow patches, of course). I wish there was more available from Jerome, but we only have so much, so enjoy it. Excellent stuff.
Very dated now. I am a huge admirer of his other books (eg Three Men in a Boat), but not this one.
I'm a diehard Jerome K. Jerome fan, and this book, while just a bit different from the other two I've read, was as funny as I could want. Very tongue-in-cheek, very subtle humorous digs at various things. I found it a delight.
I wish there had been accurate information regarding the books size. Disappointed with this editions format.
Dull
I love British humor, Jerome Klapka Jerome is one of the best . This is a good example of his fine writing, but it is not his best book.
