After years of seeing Fran Lebowitz popping up, Zelig-like, in all these incongruously glamorous settings, I wanted to like her writing.

After years of seeing Fran Lebowitz popping up, Zelig-like, in all these incongruously glamorous settings, I wanted to like her writing. She's the classic outsider-insider, who's got to have some prime observations, right? But when I finally got around to reading this book, it just felt far too dated.

In elegant, finely honed prose (The Washington Post Book World), Lebowitz limns the vicissitudes of contemporary urban life-its fads, trends, crazes, morals, and fashions. By turns ironic, facetious, deadpan, sarcastic, wry, wisecracking, and waggish, she is always wickedly entertaining.

Lebowitz's second collection of articles presents her wry, witty comments on the people, the ideas, the equipment, the frustrations, the pleasures, and the feel of modern urban life
I wanted to read one of Fran’s books after enjoying her appearances on the Bill Maher HBO show. She seemed informed, quick-witted, and funny. It was no surprise then to find her book, Social Studies, informed, clever, and on occasion, very funny.

As with most books containing the random thoughts of the author, including diet plans, auction information, and tips for phone directory personnel, some articles hit their mark, and some fall flat. Thankfully, in Social Studies, there are more hits and misses, and I found this a mostly enjoyable read.
The woman is brilliantly, satirically and exceedingly funny writer, and she can write. I was so grateful to meet up with her again, the writing doesn't date and human beings are still such even though decades have passed. I love her take on just about everything. Get her (too rarely) in an interview, and you will sit up and take notice.
Possibly the most brilliant thinker and speaker of our time. Her clarity of discernment and analysis of human behavior beats that of any psychoanalyst. I highly recommend her documentary "Public Speaking". I watch it when feeling down, as Fran's astute observations
on American culture and attitudes never fails to pick-me-up and make me laugh.
punny and funny
A classic. Required reading for New Yorkers.
Hearing her speak in person, or in the film "Public Speaking" is a different experience.
Fran's expressions and timing are hard to translate from reading the text
Excellent! Very Quick and easy! That is why I am giving it 5 stars. Thank you very much for being so attentive!
So smart, so funny, so NYC
