Great resource
It is everything I expected and much more. As educator and homeschool parent, it opens a new world to effective and efficient learning. Love the appendices where you can extend the ideas presented there. It is not imaginable how many tasks you can create by simply following the templates within the book.
This book provides numerous assessment tools for every occasion, and gives clear information on how and when to use them.
When I first started reading this book, I thought that Mr. Rogers really understood the idea of performance assessment, although upon closer examination, I realized that the book was a regurgitation of common sense. The theory and concepts were all part of my undergraduate work and while the assessments look good on the surface, they are not practical for true lesson design.
While working on my masters in curriculum and instruction I attempted to design a lesson using this book as a reference and found it to be clumsy and unoriginal. If a teacher were to truly try to use this book as suggested for designing a classroom experience, they would never have time for teaching.
I was also given the opportunity to listen to the author, Spence Rogers, in a conference call and feel that he does not have a grasp on the true classroom situation. He has other collaborators who have had recent and relevant classroom experiences, but after listening to his responses to our questions, I realized that the lead author of this book does not have the experiences necessary for me to trust his judgement.
As a classroom teacher with the desire to learn more about assessing and evaluating students, I have been more than pleased with this resource. What I find especially helpful are the many reproducible pages for use or adaptation, the helpful appendices, and the lists of performance ideas. The chapter overviewing evaluation and assessment can't be praised enough! The two words are so often used interchangably...this resource FINALLY helps sort out the important differences between the terms - the result being that readers get a much clearer idea of how to use the assessment and evaluation to benefit their students and impact true learning. And rubrics! FINALLY FINALLY FINALLY...a resource that gets to the meat of creating and designing useful EFFECTIVE rubrics that can be used to coach students to success and/or evaluate a student performance. This is THE rubric primer every professional educator should read! A terrific book for the educator serious about using evaluation and assessment to help his/her students achieve and succeed.
As an Integration Specialist, I assist teachers with designing classroom projects that are aligned with the New York State Standards. We use a format called a Learning Experience Outline. This format contains all the components of a multidisciplinary project: the NYS Standards and performance indicators being addressed; the learning activities the students will be engaged in; classroom management options; a collaborative component with other teachers and the multimedia specialist; modifications and/or enrichment activities being used; technological support that will be needed; teaching and learning strategies that will be used; and assessment strategies. However, when we asked ourselves, are we really assessing what we are teaching? We found we were not. The High Performance Toolbox has become a valuable resource for aligning our projects and the, ever important, assessment pieces. The practical application strategies in Chapter 6 have given us the understanding and tools we needed to accomplish this alignment. We have also discovered the "power of rubrics." We learned that a rubric is used whenever Quality needs to be consistently judged or attained. Students actually enjoy developing their own rubrics. Learning to develop rubrics by using examples of student work has had a powerful, positive, impact on student achievement. By using the 8 step process in the "toolbox" (pages 222-224) students identify the characteristics that distinguish different levels of work in a given product, performance or process. In other words, "mystery learning is eliminated!" By understanding what is expected in their assignments, students' achievement increases. The project approach is a great way to engage students in the learning process. Nevertheless, as teachers we need to make sure projects are aligned with the standards, the core curriculum and meeting our goals and objectives. Thanks Spence and Shari for designing a usable tool.
The Performance Toolbox is an essential tool for the serious educator. It is a practical hands -on guide for anyone who wants their teaching to be high reaching and effective. It provides you with an easy to use format to ensure that your students turn out projects that are dynamic, high quality, and evaluative in their thinking. I have found that using this technique and format, my students have maintained high levels of motivation, and learning.
