Alliot Verdon Roe was one of Britains pioneer aviators and patented the design for his first aircraft in 1906. In 1910 he founded the company that bears his name, and Avro remained at the forefront of aeronautical progress until absorbed into Hawker Siddeley, and thence into BAE, in 1963.
