An uplifting romance set during the 1860s land rush about the power of forgiveness…To provide a better life for her young daughter, Clarissa Graham joins a wagon train headed West. But as the trail turns increasingly dangerous, Clarissa fears her decision could cost them their lives. Help comes in the unlikely form of a jaded ex-soldier—Dawson Clements—who knows nothing of grace, forgiveness or even love. Now Clarissa is about to face an even greater challenge. Can she convince Dawson to remain by her side for a journey that will last a lifetime?
Definitely a different genre for Ms Bittner. I was swept up from beginning to end with the realistic characters. Dawson Clements is a Civil War veteran of Battle of Shiloh now in St Louis mustered out of U S Army with War wound. Clarissa Graham and her daughter Sophie are getting their land grant from Homestead Act. They meet by accident literally. Both have been deeply hurt in the past but this story is a well written tale of how God can work his miraculous will. In the style of Tracy Petersen this will inspire and show true faith with a soft Christian message. The realistic hardships on the Oregon Trail as Dawson & Clarissa discovers their strength and learn to love each other. The secondary characters are true to the times with all the prejudices as well as goodness. Loved this story. Diamondgirl
I am a diehard bittner fan. She has many wonderful books to her credit. This is a story that tugs at your heart strings. Clare, abandoned and swindled by her adulterous husband, takes her beautiful 3 yr old daughter sophie on a wagon train to montana to start over. Her good friends, Reverand Michael, carolyn and their little girl are her constant companions. The train is led by diehard ex army man dawson clements. He has led a tortured life since he was young and has lost his faith completely. He has not purpose in life and heads west to look for a new beginning himself. The trials and travails of those pioneer wagon trains provides the adventure. The dialogue between clare and dawson provides the evolution of their disheartened souls. And the book is enmeshed in love..family, friends, children and finally clare and dawson. There is a great deal of religious dialogue and definitely no torrid love scenes.Except for a kiss or two, no love scenes at all. While I really appreciated the story and liked the book a lot, I think it could have been less wordy on religion, which got a bit redundant, and notched up a tad on the love relationship between clare and dawson.Love relationships don't have to be tawdry and full of sex but even grade school kids have a hotter romance than this one. At any rate, You have to rejoice in the ending.
This was a very moving love story with lots of tragedy & sadness. The saving grace was their love. Dawson was a man to die for. I very much enjoyed the scriptures quoted, and Dawson,s return to God. My only disapointment was there was no love scene. I give this story 4.5 stars instead of 5 because of this. A love scene without great details would have been O.K. in a Christian story.
What a wonderful story of life, tragedies, forgiveness and Love! No swear words. Good, clean writing with so much meaning! I loved it!!!
I agree with the other two reviews. This book is a wonderful inspirational romance. Filled with laughs and crys and "real" characters with "real" issues in their lives. You really do take the trek with west with them. You see their growth and change and witness heartbreak first hand. Take time to read WALK BY FAITH. Rosanne Bittner has such a wonderful way of writing.
Faith is something we all need, faith in our ability to make a difference in earth. The only way I know to do that is to LOVE. Love every one around you and just be the best person you can be. That is lesson I have received from many of Rosanne Bittner's books, including Walk By Faith.
God is truly amazing. I needed to read this book. So many times we struggle and by reading we can find comfort and strength.
How can a writer continue with such good and exciting historical westerns. Another very good book. Can't wait for the next.
