Abby stepped in the lift and the doors closed with a sound like a shovel smoothing gravel. She breathed in the smell of someone else’s perfume, and lemon-scented cleaning fluid. The lift jerked upwards a few inches. And now, too late to change her mind and get out, with the metal walls pressing in around her, they lunged sharply downwards.

I do wish Peter would come back," every one of them said nervously, though in height and still more in breadth they were all larger thantheir captain. I am the only one who is not afraid of the pirates," Slightly said, inthe tone that prevented his being a general favourite; but perhaps somedistant sound disturbed him, for he added hastily, "but I wish hewould come back, and tell us whether he has heard anything more aboutCinderella. It was only in Peter's absence that they could speak of mothers, thesubject being forbidden by him as silly. All I remember about my mother," Nibs told them, "is that she oftensaid to my father, 'Oh, how I wish I had a cheque-book of my own!'

The fortunes of the Roman Catholic Church have varied with the swings of history's pendulum, from the earliest days of fierce persecution, to its near-total domination of the medieval period, to the Renaissance and Reformation, which moved Europe and the New World into the modern era of high technology and pervasive faithlessness. Diverse in piety, talent, and intellect, the popes have been the ultimate arbitrators of life, faith and morals for countless millions. Some popes made the office a fiefdom for family advancement and personal enrichment, while others sincerely attempted to spread the unique message of the Gospel to all humanity. Despite times of degradation, multitudes have regarded Rome and the papacy as the spiritual heart of Western civilization. Nearly 300 popes have reigned over two millennia. In Peter's Footsteps is a concise, colorful, and highly readable account of the pains they have taken to preserve the church and the faith of its believers.
